Walking Away with Thoreau: The Pleasures and Risks of Exit

In the political theory literature on Thoreau there are two focal points of analysis: the first focuses on resistance and civil disobedience, while the second concentrates on withdrawal. The theoretical intersection between these concepts has received comparatively less attention. Addressing this need, this article reads Thoreau for the connections between resistance and exit—for “resistant exit”—in order to better understand this kind of opposition.
