Background
Robert Rauchhaus is an Assistant Professor of political science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on the formulation and implementation of strategy under conditions of uncertainty, risk, and strategic interaction. His recent publications and courses apply strategic choice theory to military strategy, national security policy, and conflict management. His expertise in national security policy stems from his academic training, as well as practical experience that he gained from military service, law enforcement and work in the defense industry. Prior to joining the faculty at UCSB in 2003, Dr. Rauchhaus was a management consultant with McKinsey and Company (2000-02) and a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Center of International Studies at Princeton University (2002-03). He earned his B.A. (1993), M.A. (1995) and Ph.D. (2000) in Political Science at UC Berkeley where he worked with Kenneth Waltz, Robert Powell and Beverly Crawford. His dissertation, Third-Party Intervention in Militarized Disputes: Primum Non Nocere, examined mediation, coercive intervention, and other forms of conflict management used in both civil wars and inter-state disputes. Dr. Rauchhaus is currently completing a book on international conflict management, and he has begun work on a new project that quantitatively evaluates the effects of nuclear weapons. In 2008, he was the recipient of an Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award.
