Two New Emphases Added to Ph.D. Program

Starting in 2006, Political Science doctoral students will be able to participate in two new emphases to the doctoral program.

The first is an optional Ph.D. Emphasis in Technology and Society, designed for doctoral students in engineering, the social sciences, and the humanities who are interested in multidisciplinary course work on the societal effects of changes in information technologies. Faculty teaching in the program come from Anthropology, Communication, Computer Science, English, History, Media Arts and Technology, Political Science, and Sociology. More information on the new emphasis is available on their website, http://www.technology-society.ucsb.edu.

Second, the Political Science department is now joining with the other departments in the social sciences and humanities who are currently particapting in the Women's Studies Doctoral Emphasis. In addition to their departmental requirements, Women's Studies doctoral emphasis students are required to successfully complete four seminars that will enhance their understanding of feminist pedagogy, feminist theory, and topics relevant to the study of women, gender and/or sexuality, and a faculty member of the Women's Studies department must serve on the candidate's dissertation committee. More information on the Women's Studies Doctoral Emphasis can be found on their website, http://www.womst.ucsb.edu/Doctoral_Emphasis/doc_emphasis_requirements.html.

These new doctoral emphases join with the Doctoral Emphasis in Global and International Studies, which was added during the 2003-2004 academic year, in enriching the graduate program in Political Science.
