Larry Adams, Ph.D. '70

Larry Adams passed away September 7, 2007, after a long illness. Larry received his B.A. in Political Science at UCSB in 1958, followed by an M.A. in 1960 and his Ph.D. in 1970. A specialist on modern political philosophy and American political thought, he continued his academic career at Baruch College of the City University of New York, where he served on the faculty from 1971 until his retirement in 1996.

While pursuing his Ph.D between 1960 and 1970, Larry served as a lecturer in both Political Science and Religious Studies. Larry returned to Santa Barbara following his retirement from Baruch College, and taught courses both at Santa Barbara City College and at UCSB.

A political activist known for his engaging and intense teaching, he inspired his students, many of whom became deeply involved in government and public life. In his honor, one of these students, Marilyn Lee '69, established the Larry Adams Scholarship in Public Policy in 2001 for qualified Political Science majors who are serving an internship in a local government agency. These scholarships will continue Larry's legacy of activism and inspiration for new generations of students at UCSB.

A memorial service will be held for Larry Adams at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1500 State Street, Santa Barbara, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13. In lieu of flowers, friends may remember the UCSB Foundation (designating their contributions for the Larry Adams Scholarship), or Sarah House, 2612 Modoc Road, Santa Barbara, 93105, the hospice that cared for Larry during his final days.
