UCSB Delegation Wins Awards at Model Arab League

In their first appearance at this event, UCSB’s 16-member delegation to the Model Arab League Conference held at Georgetown University, April 5-9, 2006, won several outstanding delegate awards and an overall Honorable Mention Award based on their performance.

The Model Arab League is organized by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations, a non-profit, non-governmental educational organization dedicated to improving American knowledge and understanding of the Arab world by the university students who will be tomorrow’s leaders. UCSB’s delegation represented the country of Morocco in a series of debates on such timely topics as the proliferation of WMDs in the Middle East, the status of women in Arab society, expanding the Arab free trade zone, and strengthening Iraqi security forces. Twenty-two colleges and universities from the United States and Egypt took part in this year’s conference.

UCSB’s delegation was headed by Hassan Elhaj, Political Science undergraduate student. Outstanding delegate awards were given to Aaron Lavee (Global Studies), Sarah Kups (EAP exchange student), Kendall Jarvis (Law & Society), and Justing Hranicky-Nix (History). The participation of UCSB's delegation in the conference was made possible by support from the Offices of the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor and several campus departments, including the Department of Political Science.
