How Presidents Manage the Economy: The Good, the Bad, and the Political
When the economy goes bad, we usually blame the President. What does it take for the President to
be a successful manager of the national economy? In this UCSB Town Forum, Professor of Political Science
Stephen Weatherford will discuss how presidents select economic advisors, balance short-term popularity
with steady economic growth, and shape policy with due respect for the Federal Reserve, Congress, and
the private sector. He will also discuss what citizens can learn from good and poor economic management
in order to strengthen their ability to to hold presidents accountable and give future presidents an
incentive for responsible policy-making.
The UCSB Town Forum is a presentation of the UCSB Affiliates and is designed to bring together
business and other interested persons in meaningful discussion with members of the UCSB faculty on
matters of current interest to the community.
