Between Revolution and Empire:
Toward an Alternative history of Muslim Modernity
Adeeb Khalid is Professor of History at Carelton College in Minnesota, and is one of
the world's foremost authorities on Islan in central Asia. He received his Ph.D. from
the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993. His research specialities include
Russia, Central Asia, Middle East, and politics of cultural reform in the Muslim world.
His published work includes The Politics of Muslim cultural Reform: Jadidism in Central
Asia (UC Press, 1998) and Islam After Communisim: Religion and Politics in Central
Asia (UC Press, 2007).
Professor Khalid's lecture is given as part of the Silk Road Cultural Encounters series and
is a co-sponsored presentation of the Departments of History, Religious Studies, Global
Studies, Political Science, and UCSB Arts & Lectures.
