When Affirmative Action Was White

The featured speaker for this presentation is Ira Katznelson, Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History at Columbia University, and the current President of the American Political Science Association. In this talk, Professor Katznelson will discuss his current book, When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth Century America (Norton, 2005), which discusses how New Deal legislation and labor laws of the 1930s and 1940s affected the widening gap between whites and blacks during the period of post-war prosperity.

This event is one in a three-part series on the history of affirmative action, sponsored by the Policy History Program and the Center for the Study of Labor, Work, and Democracy at UCSB.
