China, the United States, and the Power-Transition Theory
With the increasing importance of China as a world economic power, there are many concerns
that this shift in power will lead to an eventual Sino-American clash. In a lecture sponsored
by the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies, Steve Chan, Professor
and Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Colorado, will discuss
the power-transition theory as it applies to China's recent rise in power. He will assess the
important historical, theoretical, and analytical issues that render the application of the
theory (and the reasoning behind it) unwarranted and even dangerous.
Professor Chan's publications include fourteen books and more than a hundred articles. His
research has recently focused on the topics of power-transition, democratic peace, economic
statecraft, and comparative political cultures.
This presentation is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science.
