The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy

Global political economy might be considered a dry subject for a public reading series, but this year's selection for UCSB Reads, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy, is a notable exception. On March 5, 2008, the author of this delightful book, Pietra Rivoli, will give a free public lecture on her topic, decribed as "a fascinating trek around the world to reveal the economic and political lessons from the life story of simple t-shirt."

Pietra Rivoli is a professor in the McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University, where she teaches finance and international business. Her research focus areas include social justice issues in international business and in China. She is a 2006 recipient of a Faculty Pioneer Award from the Aspen Institute. The award recognizes business school professors who have been leaders in the integration of social and environmental issues into business school curricula.

"UCSB Reads" is a campus program that seeks to engage the campus and greater Santa Barbara community in interdisciplinary issues that arise from the selected reading matter. Books are distributed free to interested students, and faculty are encouraged to incorporate the book into their respective class curricula. In addition to the public lecture by the author, a series of public discussions have been held featuring various campus faculty experts. Participating in these discussions this year are Professors Benjamin J. Cohen and John Woolley from the Political Science Department.
