| Joseph Lodge, 1932-2008 |
|
Noted jurist served more than 40 years as an instructor in the political science department at UCSB. After a 10-year battle with lymphoma, Judge Lodge passed away May 5, 2008. He was still teaching his class PS 165, "Criminal Justice," and maintaining a full courtroom schedule when he became ill at the end of April and was hospitalized. At the time of his death, Judge Lodge was the longest serving California judge still on the bench. His judicial career began in 1958 when he was elected to the Goleta/Hope Ranch Justice Court. In 1965, he was elected a Judge of the Municipal Court; then in 1998, he moved to Judge of the Superior Court, County of Santa Barbara. Lodge first taught for the economics department in 1959, then for the political science department starting in 1963 and continuously since 1966. Students have had strong praise over the years for the knowledge, insight, and sense of humor that characterized his teaching. On course evaluations, students frequently noted that his class was their favorite among all those they had taken. At his request, no memorial services are planned. |
