Presentation By Brian Walker (4:00PM - 5:30PM)
"Learning from the Confucians: Three Themes in Chinese Public Service." ( New topic.) Brian Walker is Associate Professor of Political Science at UCLA. Lane Room, Ellison Hall 3824. Brief Abstract: "Recent comparative work on Confucianism has tended to focus on the question of whether or not China has some equivalent to the Western public sphere. This paper looks instead at the Confucian idea of public service, where comparison with Western experience is somewhat easier. Especially during the Song dynasty, when Confucians were trying to win converts from Buddhism and Daoism, China developed a public service ethic of considerable sophistication. Confucian public service thinkers made a good case for public service as the most reliable path to enlightenment, one considerably more promising than anything offered by Buddhists or Daoists. This paper tours the highlights of Chinese public service thinking and suggests that Western pragmatists have a great deal to learn from the Confucians about the role of culture and individual guidance in the formulation of a service ethic."
